So I get asked all the time to create new sandwiches and to make hamburgers. I thought… hmmm, is this an opportunity knocking at my door? Why… YES it is!! So I created a new Sammy using a hamburger! And of course, I had to do some of my favorite caramelized onions! LOVE them!!
2 tbsp olive oil
2 sweet onions, sliced
2 tsp kosher salt, divided
2 tbsp Marsala or dry red wine
1 tsp granulated sugar
1 lb ground beef
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp onion powder
2 tsp garlic powder divided
2 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tbsp herb paste
8 thin slices Swiss cheese
4 hoagie rolls
Heat olive oil over medium low heat in a large skillet, add onion. Cook until soft and slightly translucent.
Add one teaspoon salt and the sugar and wine. Continue to cook and stir, being careful not to burn, until the onions become soft with a nice caramel color to them.
Preheat grill to medium. Meanwhile, form the ground beef into oblong shaped patties to fit the buns, remember when you grill the meat it will shrink a bit so make the patties a bit larger than the bun size. Sprinkle with the 1 teaspoon of the garlic powder, salt and onion powder. Place on grill, cook 5 minutes, flip, 5 more minutes flip, 2 minutes.
Flip top with the cheese slices and cook an additional 2 minutes or until cheese is melted.
In small bowl combine herb paste, garlic and mayonnaise, stir.
Spread mixture over the inside of the hoagie rolls.
Place cooked hamburger patty on each of the rolls, top with onions… slice in half and serve hot! Great with baked beans and salad.
