Apple Walnut Streusel Pie!
By: Kecia’s Flavor Breakthrough!
The Blueberry Almond Streusel Pie was such a hit in my house I thought I would try again. I have come up with three new recipes, this is number two in the group! Apple pie is one that I have made in the past. I never did my own crust before, but always the filling. Most recipes call for nutmeg. That is not my favorite spice. I like a little clove or even allspice instead. I guess I am not quite ready to graduate to a 2 crust (homemade) pie yet.
- Crust for a 10” pie
- 5 to 6 crisp tart apples, slice, peeled and cored
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup all purpose flour
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. allspice
- ½ tsp. salt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp. butter, cold and cut up into small cubes
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2/3 cup butter cold and cut up into small cubes
- ½ cup chopped walnuts
Preheat oven to 375*F
Place apple slices into a large bowl.
Sprinkle the sugar, flour, cinnamon, allspice, salt and lemon juice over the apples. Stir to coat. Set aside for about ½ hour.Mix topping: Place brown sugar, flour cinnamon and vanilla extract in bowl. Stir together, add butter and cut into dry ingredients until crumbly. Add walnuts and stir.
Place crust into pie dish. (it might not be pretty… but it sure was flaky good!)
Stir the apple mixture and pour it into the crust, spread out evenly.
Dot with Butter.
Top the apples with the topping mixture. Cover the edges of the crust with foil so they don’t burn. Place in oven and bake for 50 – 60 minutes or until crust is browned and topping is browned. I did place a piece of foil over the top after about 30 minutes to my topping didn’t get too brown.
Slice into 8 slices and serve. Ice cream or a slice of sharp cheddar cheese will go nicely with this pie.
